*Disclaimer* We know that there are multiple ways to conceive a baby. We look forward to exploring and sharing all options in the future!
So you have decided to actively start trying to conceive a baby, now what? Some people prefer to just go for it and let nature take its course. Others prefer to research conception from a to z. And many others fall somewhere in between. Irregardless of where you fall on this spectrum, there are a few things to consider as you begin your TTC (trying to conceive) journey.
5 Things to Do Before TTC
- Schedule an appointment for a physical with your primary care physcian (both partners!). Having a complete work up (including labs) around the time you want to start TTC’ing can be a great way to get a baseline of your general health. If there are any health concerns, you can address those while getting ready to TTC.
- Schedule a visit with your OB/GYN or Midwife for a pap smear, HPV/STI screening and a preconception consultation. This is a great time to bring up any reproductive questions and concerns with your provider. It’s always a good idea to have the testing done prior to getting pregnant so that if there are any positive results they can be treated and monitored prior to pregnancy.
- Start taking a prenatal vitamin. One of things you’ll probably discuss with your provider is starting a prenatal vitamin (and possibly other vitamins as prescribed). Taking a prenatal is basically an insurance policy to ensure your body has the necessary vitamins and minerals to make healthy eggs prior to a pregnancy.
- Reduce your stress. It’s pretty obvious that we all could use a little less stress. TTC’ing adds it’s own stress so whatever you can do to reduce your current stress level will be beneficial. Finding and implementing personalized stress management coping strategies is a great way to work on reducing your current stress level (and have tools available for when “the going gets tough”).
- Strengthen your relationships. Creating a family is an amazing journey but it can also be full of fears, frustrations and unknowns. Work on building and strengthening the relationships around you so you have one heck of a support system for wherever your TTC journey takes you.
We know that TTC journeys are highly personal; however, we are here to support you and your family at any point in this journey to creating a family.
